On October 17th, 2025 - The long-running hit television series Expedition Unknown won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Travel and Adventure Program at the 52nd annual Daytime Emmys, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
During the gala, the NATAS presented Daytime Emmys in 14 categories, recognizing Expedition Unknown for excellence in 2024-2025. The series, which is one of the most international travel programs airing on television today, features explorer Josh Gates as he travels the world investigating enduring archaeological mysteries and captivating legends.

World explorer Josh Gates is back with double the adventure and intrigue when all-new seasons of EXPEDITION UNKNOWN and EXPEDITION FILES premiere on Wednesday, November 5 at 9pm ET/PT on Discovery Channel. Renowned for his thrilling, immersive investigations, Gates embarks on his most ambitious expeditions to date, cutting through myth and legend to unearth lost artifacts and historic treasures across the globe.
The Emmy-winning EXPEDITION UNKNOWN kicks off at 9pm ET/PT with a groundbreaking two-part adventure inside Egypt’s Great Pyramid. With exclusive access to one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Gates unravels long-held conspiracy theories about how this marvel of engineering was truly built. Using first-of-its-kind 3D scans of a mysterious tunnel system, Gates executes a daring experiment to replicate the Pyramid’s construction, uncovering a labyrinth of secrets buried deep beneath the stone.
Throughout the extraordinary new season, Gates leads viewers on high-stakes and off-the-map investigations. He teams up with Gold Rush’s Parker Schnabel to chase a multi-million dollar treasure from an infamous stagecoach heist, scours the Oregon coast on a real-life Goonies quest on the 40th anniversary of the iconic film, plunges into the icy Baltic Sea searching for a lost Nazi submarine and braves crocodile-infested waters in Nicaragua to hunt down Cornelius Vanderbilt’s lost steamship.
Last season, viewers tuned in for a jaw-dropping and historic discovery at the ancient city of Petra, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World. Working with a joint Jordanian/American project, Josh helped conduct a remote sensing scan using ground penetrating radar. The scans indicated the presence of a mysterious void 12 feet beneath the so-called Treasury building, world famous as the cinematic resting place of the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Josh and the team embarked on an excavation of the site, and, after days of digging,, they made a stunning discovery: a long-buried tomb located directly beneath the historic building where more than a million visitors a year come to visit. The find made headlines around the world and will help archaeologists continue to unravel the mysterues of the Treasury and the enigmatic Nabatean civilization who carved the rock-cut city of Petra.
